Edward Motale’s new passion is men’s health and well-being


Brothers for Life ambassador Edward Motale

Former Bafana Bafana and Orlando Pirates FC left back, Edward Motale may have retired from professional soccer but he hasn’t retired from the game of life.

Motale who is affectionately known as “Magents” in football circles has taken his defensive skills to another field where he educates young and old men about the risks of HIV and gender-based violence.

This 45 year-old father of three is one of the Brothers for Life coaches whose contribution to men’s health and wellness has touched many in prisons, communities and youth clubs around the country.

His passion lies in men and their health and he encourages them to dribble past the HIV infection by consistently using protection (condoms )and never lift the hand to their partners as they may land in prisons.

His involvement in the Brothers for Life campaign was influenced by the arrest of his uncle and a friend whose crimes include counts of robbery.
“I was always close to tears when I visited my uncle in correctional services ( prison )and, I would make time to visit my uncle in prison. Whenever I was there to check on him I would always think about how I could help him but there was none. I would only comfort him””

Brothers for Life with funding from United States Agency for International Development is a national men’s campaign that aims to create a movement of men that will ignite and spread throughout South Africa, to promote healthier and more responsible lifestyles. The campaign draws upon the spirit of Brotherhood that exists among South African men and encourages men to positively influence each other as men, partners, and parents and as leaders.

About Brothers for Life

Brothers for Life promote positive male norms and encourage the uptake of health services such as Medical Male Circumcision (MMC), Men taking up HIV Testing, Consistent condom use by Men and reduction of sexual partners. The campaign mobilises men to actively engage in activities to address Gender-Based Violence (GBV) in their communities.
